In the framework of a comprehensive study of the coastal marine ecosystems of Guadeloupe Island (French West Indies), a remote sensing survey of marine communities was conducted in the Bay of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. Pictures of SPOT satellite were used. At first sight, XS data from SPOT did not seem to be well adapted to extract information from deepest underwater areas. In the present study, a method for analysis of XS data was developed, which increases tenuous spectral differences associated to very low intensity signals. This study presents the first results of an ongoing research program that aims to derive thematic maps of the intertidal lagoon of Arcachon (SW Atlantic coast of France) from space imagery. At this stage, we present the results of the tests performed on Formosat-2 imagery. Several classification strategies have been tried with the aim to discriminate the sedimentary facies and the main species of the lagoon. The classes calculated by an optimized unsupervised clustering method, based on simulated annealing global minimization technique, were used to train a supervised classification algorithm. GAMBAS est un programme de la Commission Européenne de recherche sur le développement durable de l'aquaculture dans le delta du Mékong. La pluridisciplinarité des équipes impliquées dans ce programme a permis de cerner précisément l'impact de l'aquaculture sur l'écosystème « mangrove ». Dans cette action, la télédétection a joué un rôle fédérateur des connaissances acquises au cours des quatre années de collaboration franco-vietnamienne (2001-2004). The objective of this study, carried out in the Gironde estuary inlet, was to determine the nature of the seaward dispersion of estuarine water and suspended sediments during a spring tide and high river flow. On June 3, 19(7, three flights were made over the inlet, at mid ebb, low tide and mid flood. The planned flight at high tide was cancelled due to adverse meteorological conditions. Sargassum muticum is a Japanese alga from the pheophycee class which has been introduced in Europe about fifteen years ago. It has greatly developed on account of its intrinsic characteristics (adaptation, growth speed, reproduction mode, etc...) and the favorable conditions it has encountered. The nuisance it generates can be very high but no efficient fighting solution has been found yet. Only mechanical means can be considered on a one off basis in areas where eradication is indispensable. Any development is faced with the problem of pick up costs.
